Ridley and Leni waited on the stools behind the counter for Lark and Auden to arrive. They’d been sitting there for the past thirty minutes because Leni had grown impatient. She’d padded back and forth in the store as though that would make the hands on the clock speed up. He wished it would’ve worked.

The schedule showed Lark and Auden were both set to be there at ten in the morning, and it was ten minutes until then.

“Do you think we can convince them?” Leni asked. “I really thought I could persuade Auden yesterday, but he wasn’t willing to listen.”

As a result of the curse, Auden’s best friend had died and shouldn’t have. Ridley regretted it, but the pre-fillers were unpredictable like that. “Can you blame him?”

Leni hunched over and cradled her face in her hands, appearing tired while staring down at a pencil covered in eyeballs. “No.”

“Did you take your medicine?” He should’ve reminded her about it as soon as she’d woken up.

“I forgot. Too much on my mind.” Unzipping her purse, she tugged out the bottle of medicine and swallowed two pills down with her water.

“I know you’re worried about everything. But you need to take care of yourself, especially if we’re going to beat this whole thing at the masquerade. You didn’t make it this far to fail, right?” Ridley was worried about Leni getting a fever again like she had in the beginning, but that could’ve just been an effect of her wounds, mixed with the weakness from her slowly dying. Possibly…

“Yes, Doctor, I promise to pay attention to the time more closely now.” She smiled, noticing his serious face, and placed a hand on his shoulder. He couldn’t help but think about the night before, him being bolder because of the alcohol, their soft kiss, her saying she would try not to break his heart…

“We need something to keep us focused,” she continued. “If you could pick a song right now to describe what’s to come at the masquerade, what would it be?”

With a sigh, he picked up a pen on the counter and wrote on a notepad. “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.”

“Let’s hope shots won’t be fired.” She squeezed the bridge of her nose and continued to read over his words.

A click sounded at the front door and the cowbell rang. Ridley and Leni both jerked as Lark entered. It was five minutes before her shift was supposed to start. The door remained open as Auden followed. Lark wore her jacket with dark jeans and boots, and Auden had on a vest over a Cure T-shirt. As they both walked forward, the duo looked up at the same time and stopped when their gazes landed on Ridley and Leni.

“When you said ‘tomorrow,’ I didn’t realize you meant as soon as we got here,” Lark said, shaking her head, her headphones hanging around her neck. “Auden already told me what happened between him and Leni yesterday, and I shared everything that happened here.”

Auden whispered
